DOE released biogas opportunities roadmap progress report in December 2015

Biogas Opportunities Roadmap originally published by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Department of Energy (DOE), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in August 2014. Up-to-date, more than 2,000 sites across the United States that produce biogas, as well as the potential for an additional 11,000 biogas systems were identified. Following publication of the Biogas Opportunities Roadmap in 2014, there have been many notable policy and technological achievements. This report highlights the individual efforts of each agency, which illustrated how government and private agencies are collaborating to expand the biogas industry and reduce GHG emissions. Technological achievements included projects funded, programs and partnerships created, and reported published.

Six barriers for a robust biogas industry identified in the original Biogas Opportunities Roadmap still exist: 1. Lack of awareness of biogas benefits; 2. Unpredictable biogas market conditions; 3. Lack of market maturity; 4. Lack of full valuation; 5. Inconsistencies across Federal, state, and local governments; and 6. Lack of technical and applied research and development. At the end of this report, government agencies summarized that despite many challenges that need to be overcome, the biogas sector continues to recognize many opportunities for growth.
