Algae Biomass Organization’s “2015 Industry Survey” Showed an Optimistic Outlook

On 3/11/2015, Algae Biomass Organization released its “2015 Industry Survey”, which summarizes results of the survey conducted in January and February. The survey includes more than 230 responses from companies and individuals involved in directly producing and buying algae or algae-­‐ derived products, as well as equipment manufacturers, research laboratories, providers of equipment or materials, government agencies and service providers.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Respondents came from across the industry, with strong participation (30%+) from producers of energy/fuel products, food & agriculture products and health & nutrition products
  • The 2015 survey shows that optimism on the price competitiveness of algae fuels remains—75% of respondents say it is likely that algae-­‐based fuels will be cost-­‐competitive by
  • 45% of producers say the price of algae fuel will be below $3.00 per gallon by 2020, while a whopping 91% believe prices will be below $5.00 per
  • 93% of respondents believe algae-­‐derived plastics and chemicals will be cost-­‐competitive by 2020, and 97% of respondents say the same for algae-­‐based
  • Congressional engagement is high—68% of respondents’ organizations either have met with or plan to meet with
  • Employers again confidently predicted growth for 2015, with more than 70% predicting increased production and hiring this The results suggest broad and continued growth through 2020.
  • 89% of employers say better federal policy support would likely accelerate
  • The most important existing federal policies for building a robust algae industry were identified as: (1) research & development support (2) Commercialization support (3) Tax incentives and credits and (4) the Renewable Fuel
  • The most important federal policies not yet in effect today were identified as: (1) increased algae and carbon utilization research and deployment support by Federal agencies (2) Regulatory approvals for algae-derived products (3) stable, predictable support in tax policy and(4) including carbon utilization in climate regulations
