Abstract:
Biomass fast pyrolysis has aroused great attention and interests in recent years. However, its direct use as liquid fuel raises many problems because of its acidity, high oxygen content and high water content. Due to its poor properties, several methods of upgrading the original bio-oil were developed in recent years. This paper reviews the main methods of upgrading biomass pyrolysis oil such as hydrodeoxygenation, catalytic cracking of pyrolysis vapors, emulsification and esterification. The advantages and shortcomings of upgrading methods were discussed and compared. Furthermore, the problems and focuses were summarized with some suggestions presented on upgrading and applications of bio-oil.
