Abstract:
With the sharp depletion of fossil fuels, the utilization of renewable energy resources
has attracted a lot of attention. One promising method to produce advanced alternative
fuels is converting lignocellulosic biomass into bio-oil and then upgrading bio-oil into
advanced biofuels. Fast pyrolysis is a relatively mature process to produce bio-oil. The
bio-oil has high oxygen content, high corrosivity, low stability and low heating value, and
thus isn‘t able to be used as transportation fuel directly. The effort to produce chemicals
from bio-oil is also limited due to its complex chemical composition and resulting high
processing cost. This chapter aims to focus on the main upgrading processes of bio-oil in
recent years. It also points out challenges to achieve improvements of bio-oil upgrading
in the future.
